(Hanka Lindstaedt) According to ancient legends, faeries are the hidden, unwashed children of Eve. She had hidden them from God when he spoke to her because she was fearful of him. God then told her that all the children she hid would remain hidden from man and would become elves, faeries and Huldre folk – not good enough for heaven, but too good for hell. Whatever names we give these ”dirty children“ – be it faeries, elves, albs, Nachtmahrs, Salige Fräulein (...); we all have a certain idea of what they might look like and we all have heard about them before. They appeared in the tales of our childhood or in films, and we’re probably more familiar with them than we might think. The illustrated book “Faeries and Fiends” pays homage to these peculiar, nice, gentle, puerile, stubborn and somewhat mischievous entities who live shyly and only rarely provide insight into their lives. Timo Denz has tracked the little faeries down, taken pictures of winged dryads in silent forests, of beautiful sidhes dancing at night and of mischievous creatures having a blood feast. Thanks to the unique adaptation of illustrator Corinna Schwerdtfeger the pictures turned into an epitome of our fears, desires and dreams... Timo Denz, a 28-year-old photo and graphic designer, studied Communication Design in Stuttgart, majoring in Photographic Design. In 2002 he published his first and very successful illustrated book “modern times witches”, which was followed by “FreakShowDiary” in 2004. Numerous exhibitions and magazines emphasise his increasing success. Corinna Schwerdtfeger is a 29-year-old iIllustrator and graphic designer from Hamburg.
